Dr. Sal A. Arria

Sal A. Arria, D.C.,is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of the International Sports Sciences Association. Dr. Arria was a team doctor for the USA Track and Field team at the 1984 Olympic Games and a team doctor for three U.S. Powerlifting Federation World Championships. Dr. Arria has been a member of the Sports Medicine Committee for the U.S.P.F. since 1985 and was three-time California State Powerlifting champion and ranked in the top three in the U.S.A. in 220 and 242 lb. divisions.

He was also the Director of the Santa Barbara Chiropractic and Sports Medicine Clinic for nearly 20 years and was appointed as a Special Advisor to the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness. Dr. Arria is also an advisor to many Olympic and professional athletes. He has appeared on numerous national television shows airing on CNBC, ESPN and the Family Channel and was the Executive Director of the American Institute of Health Education's 1996 TELLY AWARD winning show The Five Step Back Solution. He was also the Fitness Program Designer for Kathy Ireland's abdominal training video, ABSolutely Fit.
 

Dr. Frederick C. Hatfield

Frederick C. Hatfield, MSS, Ph.D., ISSA Co-Founder and President, Dr. Hatfield, (a.k.a. "Dr. Squat"), holds a Ph.D. from Temple University with competency examinations taken in sport psychology, motor learning and sport sociology. He has provided research and development and marketing consultation to several nutritional and fitness equipment manufacturers and other fitness-related corporations around the world.He has been both a principal in, and consultant to, numerous commercial enterprises involved in fitness, nutrition, publishing and education since 1970, and has been directly involved in establishing and consulting for numerous health and fitness clubs across the U.S.

He has taught sports psychology, strength physiology, and physical education at the University of Wisconsin, Newark State College, Bowie State College, Temple University and the University of Illinois. He was a consultant to the U.S. Olympic Committee, the International Federation of Bodybuilders (IFBB), the West German Body Building Federation, Australian Powerlifting Federation, and CBS Sports. He was coach three times for the U.S. National Powerlifting team and a member of the executive committees of the U.S. Olympic Weightlifting Federation and U.S. Powerlifting Federation.

The founding editor of Sports Fitness magazine (now Men’s Fitness), he has written more than 60 books and over 200 articles on sports fitness, weight training and athletic nutrition. He is a former standout college gymnast, Mr. Teenage Connecticut, Mr. Atlantic Coast and Mr. Mid America in bodybuilding, Wisconsin and Connecticut weightlifting champion, broken over 30 world records as a powerlifter competing in five different weight divisions, and won the world Championships in powerlifting three times in three different weight divisions.

In 1987, at the age of 45, Hatfield established a world record in the squat at 1,014 pounds (255 body weight), the most anyone had ever lifted in the history of competition. His frequent world record-breaking performances in the squat have gained him the nickname of "Dr. Squat." He remains competitive in Masters Level Olympic Weightlifting, having represented the USA in the 1998 World Masters Games in Oregon.

In June of 2000, Dr. Hatfield was inducted into the Powerlifting Hall of Fame, located in York, PA.

Tom Platz, B.Sc. MFS
ISSA Director of Body Building Sciences

Tom Platz is the ISSA Director of Bodybuilding Science. He has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education and Nutrition from Wayne State University in Detroit, and a Master's Degree in Business Administration from the University of California, Los Angeles. Platz is a retired bodybuilding superstar, winning the Mr. Universe title several times. He now uses the expertise gathered from many years of professional bodybuilding to teach and certify ISSA fitness trainers at seminars throughout the United States. His skills and dynamic teaching style have inspired thousands of fitness trainers to achieve new levels of excellence.

E.J. “Doc” Kreis, Ed.D
ISSA Director of Sports Sciences

E.J. “Doc” Kreis is co-author of the ISSA Specialist in Sports Conditioning Certification. Doc is in his sixth year as an assistant athletic director and head coach for speed-strength and conditioning at Colorado University. He joined the staff on January 23, 1993.

Kreis, age 45, was named the national Collegiate Strength Coach of the Year for 1994-95 by the Professional Football Strength and Conditioning Coaches Society, the second time he has been afforded national honors in his career.

He also was named the recipient of the 1995 Stan Jones Award. Doc met the stringent criteria for this award in six areas, including the performance of Colorado University’s athletic teams (placing in the top 10 of the Sears Director's Cup Standings).
 

Bill Pearl
ISSA International Fitness Advisor

Bill Pearl is one of the greatest bodybuilders of all time. He is a former Mr. California, Mr. America, and four-time Mr. Universe. Bill Pearl began lifting weights at 11 years of age, and owned and managed world-renowned bodybuilding gyms in Southern California for over 30 years. In the 1980’s, Pearl and his wife Judy (also a bodybuilder) self-produced a remarkable book, Keys to the Inner Universe. It is by far the most complete bodybuilding book ever written. It has 638 pages, weights 5 pounds, and contains 1500 weightlifting exercises. In addition to co-authoring Keys to the Inner Universe, Pearl wrote Getting Stronger and co-wrote Getting In Shape.

Pearl travels all over America, Europe, and Japan speaking to trainers, professionals and amateurs interested in physical fitness. Pearl is known for his ability to transform his vast knowledge of fitness training into terms readily understandable to the average person. Bill is over 60 years old and looks at least 10 years younger. His life is a testament to the virtues of physical fitness and sound nutrition.
 

Karl Knopf, Ed.D
ISSA Director of Fitness for the Physically Limited

Dr. Knopf is the co-author of the
ISSA Specialist in Fitness for Older Adults Certification program and the ISSA Adaptive Fitness Specialist Certification program. He began his teaching career at Foothill College in Los Altos, California in 1976 as the coordinator of Adapted Physical Education. The program has evolved into the largest in California. Dr. Knopf has been instrumental in developing programs for mature adults, persons with arthritis and chronic pain, persons with disabilities, and the developmentally delayed. He has written three books: Water Workouts, Fitness Over Fifty, and his most recent, Senior Fitness for the ISSA.

Dr. Knopf has been writing, consulting and speaking professionally throughout his career and is a frequent guest on television and radio talk shows. Since 1986 he has been a consultant with Stanford School of Medicine for older adult research projects and is a recent recipient of the respected NISOD, Excellence in Teaching Award. The ISSA is proud to have Dr. Knopf join our growing staff and lend his expertise in the field of Adaptive Physical Education and Older Adult Fitness.

Dr. Jack Barnathan
ISSA Director of Fitness Sciences

Dr. Jack Barnathan, D.C., is an award winning Sports Doctor and ISSA Master of Fitness Science recognized internationally as a leading authority on strength development and its dramatic impact on health & human performance.

A lifelong strength athlete, Dr. Barnathan serves as both a pro judge and attending physician for the International Federation of Bodybuilders (IFBB) which sanctions Pro and Olympic Bodybuilding and Women's Pro Fitness worldwide. Dr. Barnathan has been officially recognized as bodybuilding's "Strength Doctor" acknowledging his use of strength training principles and techniques in the care of his patients who often include Pro and Olympic athletes from virtually every known sport.

His Strength & Performance seminars are featured at some of the world's most exclusive events including Arnold Schwarzenegger's VIP Training Seminar, the Olympia Fitness Expo in Las Vegas, the annual Fitness Physicians Summit in New York City and the private Palm Beach club 'Mar-a-Lago', owned by Donald Trump.

Dr. Barnathan has been awarded the IFBB's Gold Medal, one of Pro Bodybuilding's highest honors. He has been voted both International Sports Chiropractor of the Year and Chiropractor of the Year. The President's Council on Physical Fitness & Sports officially commended Dr. Barnathan as "a vital link in the national fitness family", and The Presidential Certificate of Merit was awarded to Dr. Barnathan for his efforts on behalf of community fitness, with the President of the United States personal citing him as "a profound influence and shining example for us all."
 

Charles Staley, B.Sc., MSS
Vice President of Program Development
ISSA Director of Martial Arts Sciences

Charles I. Staley, B.Sc., MSS, is a sports conditioning specialist and Vice President of Program Development for the International Sports Sciences Association. A former martial arts competitor and trainer, Staley is also an Olympic weightlifting coach, as well as a master’s level track and field competitor (discus event). He has coached elite athletes from many sports, including martial arts, boxing, track & field, football, Olympic weightlifting, and bodybuilding. Staley has written over 150 published articles, and has lectured extensively on the topics of human performance and sport training. He has recently authored a text on conditioning for the martial arts, and has several other books in the planning stages.

Bob Delmonteque, ND
ISSA Director of Fitness for Older Adults

For the past 50 years, master trainer Bob Delmonteque has helped tens of thousands of people achieve proven, dramatic results with his celebrated training method that combines expert training advice and sound nutritional counseling. Delmonteque’s no-nonsense approach to physical conditioning and weight loss has worked miracles for Hollywood stars such as John Wayne, Errol Flynn, and contemporary stars like Matt Dillon. He also trained the original Apollo astronauts.

Delmonteque has owned and operated over 500 health clubs and is currently the technical advisor to some of the most renowned names in the fitness industry. He is also the senior model and technical advisor for California's largest health club chain.

Delmonteque has become synonymous with fitness for older adults and is America’s premier senior fitness consultant. He is in his late-70s and still runs marathons, cycles 120 miles at a time, and bench presses over 250 pounds.
 

Dan Gastelu, M.Sc., MFS
ISSA Director of Nutritional Sciences

Dan Gastelu , MSc, MFS, serves as Director of Nutritional Sciences for the International Sports Sciences Association. Gastelu developed and co-authored the ISSA’s Specialist in Performance Nutrition certification program and course book, which is used to certify doctors, physical therapists, fitness trainers, strength coaches and nutritionists. He brings to the ISSA a combination of academic, research, and industry experience. Gastelu is a graduate of Rutgers University, where he taught science courses from 1980 to 1984. Currently, he creates and teaches CE courses about nutrition and dietary supplements for pharmacists and the ISSA. During the past two decades Gastelu has developed many health care products, including: dietary supplements, sports nutritionals, nutraceuticals, and OTC drugs. He directed innovative research programs examining the effects of different nutrition programs on body composition, health and physical performance.

In recent years he has worked on numerous projects with prominent health experts, such as: Frederick C. Hatfield, Ph.D., Richard Simmons, Jack La Lanne, Denise Austin, and Tony Little. Recent books include: The Complete Nutritional Supplements Buyer’s Guide, All About Sports Nutrition, All About Bioflavonoids, All About Carnitine, and Avery’s Sports Nutrition Almanac.
 

Jim E. Wright, Ph.D., MFS
ISSA Director of Nutritional Research

James E. Wright, PhD, is one of the country's leading authorities on exercise program design, specific exercise techniques and diets and nutrition for optimal physical and mental performance. A career military officer and research scientist, Dr. Wright has spent most of his professional life studying the most efficient and effective ways to improve body composition, physical capacities and performance. He helped develop and supervise the incorporation of exercise science into the physical training materials and programs for U.S. Army personnel and helped instruct and evaluate the Army's cadre of elite Master Fitness Trainers.

The editor of Muscle & Fitness for six years, and now senior science editor for "FLEX", Dr. Wright has authored several books, scores of professional articles, and hundreds of articles in health and fitness magazines for the general public. Considered one of the true masters of exercise and stretching techniques, Dr. Wright is changing the ways muscle building and fat loss are being perceived and performed throughout the world.
